The Gas Turbine is a heavy duty three (3) stage Turbo Turbine Model MS6001B running at 5100rpm full speed was manufactured by General Electric Company and is coupled to a 39200kVA synchronous Brush Electrical Generator operating at 3000rpm speed through a reduction Load Gear Box (5100/3000 ratio). The GT is kerosene fired and in turn gives out electrical energy, exhaust gases and other forms of waste energy. The GT1 and GT2 were commissioned in 1986 and 1999 respectively at Kipevu. They operated there until 2010 when they were relocated and commissioned at Embakasi substation in Nairobi County. They were later decommissioned and relocated to Muhoroni in Kericho County and commissioned in 2016 for GT1 and 2019 for GT2 to meet the increasing demand of electricity in the Western Region of the country. The gas turbines are the only KenGen generators contracted to supply both active and reactive power to the grid.
