As Operations Director, key responsibilities comprise overseeing Operations and Maintenance of power plants to ensure high plant availability at optimized operational costs, rehabilitation and upgrade of plants to facilitate uptake of latest technology so as to improve operations and extend effective plant life, continuous improvement and automation of systems to align with sustainable best market practices, optimum power dispatch and scheduling of major plant outages through effective collaboration with the off-taker, facilitate design and implementation of optimum power evacuation arrangements, involvement in power purchase agreement negotiations, coordination of bulk energy billing and collaborating with key sector players to ensure a stable and secure national grid.
Eng Kariuki oversees the following departments: Eastern Hydros, Thermal Kipevu, Central (Thermal & Wind), Technical Services and Western Hydros.
Previously, the Technical Services Manager, he boasts an illustrious career in the energy power sector spanning over 28 years.

Legal counsel of the Company and ensures the Company is represented positively and credibly to the external environment. Custodian of the Company interests in regard to property and indemnity. Responsible for Finance & ICT Division comprising Finance, Corporate Finance & ICT.
Leads on Raising of funds to Finance multi-billion Energy generation projects, management of Financiers and banking Relations, development of Cutting Edge ICT Infrastructure, Financial reporting, budgets process management and control, Organizational restructuring and Cost saving mechanisms.
Managing Financier and banking Relationship, Developing Cutting Edge ICT Infrastructure including Automation of processes, developing integrated environment. Financial reporting, budgets process management and control, Organisation restructuring and Cost saving mechanisms. Raised US$1.37bn debt from DFI and US$315million from bond in East Africa.

Responsible for spearheading the Company’s interaction with the energy regulatory environment. In-charge of value levers in regard to dispatch requirements and Power Purchase Agreements while steering the deregulation process to maximize value for KenGen by engaging key stakeholders (energy sector players, regulators, neighbouring communities). Championing prudent and sustainable management of the environment and reinforcement of the quality guarantees and safety practices. Departments: Regulatory Affairs, Quality & Safety, Environment & CDM, Corporate & Community Affairs.

A major role of this function is to support the Company in maintaining ‘thought leadership’ in power generation and related services. The four main responsibilities include – development and management of the Company Strategy by identifying and driving execution of strategic initiatives and growth opportunities; driving the innovation process that develops new ways of meeting the Company goals; leading and managing the Company’s result-based performance and accountability system; and driving knowledge harvesting and transfer across the business.
David was appointed in the current position in September 2014 having worked for close to 16 years in various divisions and departments within the Company including Managing Director’s Office, Corporate Planning, Technical Audit and Institutional Strengthening. He is a graduate Engineer with Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and a Full Member of Kenya Institute of Management (MKIM). David has a wealth of experience in leading organizational transformation having led the execution of the Company “Good-to-Great Transformation Agenda” for the last 8 years, resulting in commissioning of over 700MW of new generation capacity. His current focus is launching the second transformation agenda to see KenGen add 2,500MW by 2025.

Responsible for overseeing the assessment and development of geothermal resources as well as the management of the reservoir & steam field and Geothermal Plant operations. This is in line with the Good-to-Great transformation strategy and Company’s focus on green energy with a bias to geothermal energy development. Responsible for providing oversight in the efficient and effective operations of the supply chain function of the Company. A key aspect of this role is ensuring KenGen’s planning, buying, and monitoring of procurement; and initiatives which support strategic organisational goals and objectives. Departments: Supply Chain and Procurement
Responsible for human capital; planning, recruitment, development, performance management, reward and wellness. Responsible for harmonious employee relations, management of all the Company’s logistics, fleet and facilities is abided to, with emphasis on comfort and convenience of employees.
Strong academic and professional qualifications. Mr Serem joins KenGen with a rich private sector experience. He has previously worked at East African breweries Kenya ltd. Reckittbenckiser Central Africa (East Africa and west Africa) and the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.
